2. Answer the following questions in about 30 words.
(i) Name three states having black soil and the crop which is mainly grown in it.
(ii) What type of soil is found in the river deltas of the eastern coast? Give three main features of this type of soil.
(iii) What steps can be taken to control soil erosion in the hilly areas?
(iv) What are the biotic and abiotic resources? Give some examples.
Ans. (i) The three states where black soils are mainly found are Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Black soil is also known as Regur soil. They are clayey and can hold moisture. These soils are high in calcium, magnesium, potash and lime. Cotton is mainly grown in it.
(ii) Alluvial soils are found in the river deltas of the eastern coast. Three main features of alluvial soils are:
(a) They consist of sand, silt and clay.
(b) They are highly fertile and so intensive cultivation is done.
(c) They are ideal for the growth of rice, wheat, sugarcane, pulses, etc.
(iii) To control soil erosion in the hilly areas, the following steps can be taken:
Follow contour ploughing. This will decelerate the flow of water down the slopes.
Terrace farming can be done. It restricts soil erosion.
Strip farming is also an effective method of soil conservation and helps in checking soil erosion.
(iv) (a) Biotic resources are available in the biosphere and have life such as human beings, livestock, fisheries, animals and forests.
